Laaaazy Saturday: "Alright, who pee'd in the kiddie pool...?"

("Hello?... Anybody?...")

Yep. Campus is dead alright. Which is kinda cool if you're one of the few actually trying to get work done. You can boogie across campus without having to dodge oblivious girls on cellphones and the ever-helpful Turlington preachers and their warnings that "Premarital hand holding leads to PREMATURE EJACULATION!" :

Anyway, I think I may have found where Lady GaGa got some of her inspiration from. While cruising on the Library West computers for cut-rate Craigslist escorts, I stumbled upon the official "Dragonette - Fixin to Thrill" Music video.

Now, I like to think I'm a reasonably insightful individual, but I honestly have no fucking clue what the hell is going on in this video. All I can discern is that it involves massive amounts of VHS tape...

Human hair...

And whatever you want to call this.

Now that you're thoroughly confused and creeped-out, here's the bangin' Villains remix. Also, for something completely unrelated, a 1964 recording of "The Kinks - All Day and All of the Night". I don't know, it seemed like appropriate chill-in-your-front-yard-with-your-neighbor's-kiddie-pool music.

So enjoy your weekend everybody, and try not to pee in the kiddie pool.

Ski Goggles in the Summer : "Guys? Do I look cool yet?... Guys?..."

As some of you may already know, word on the street is that starting next summer, freshmen will no longer be able to start classes during Summer B term (Upon attempting to confirm this, UF's god-awful search function kept returning bogus rec sports pages...). This means the rest of us will have to wait until August to chuckle under our breath at scenes like this :

("Damn, the Hub looks far from the Reitz. Maybe we should take a bus.")

On a totally unrelated note, seeing as how the current fashion trend as far as eyewear is concerned is to out-ridiculous-ify the guy next to you, I may have stumbled upon this Summer's next big thing: ski goggles. Not convinced? Check out how fly this 80 pound Asian kid looks rocking the tres nouvelle goggle look :

("My Mom won't let me leave the house without these things")

What good are ski goggles without some equally funky square wave tunes, 'eh? Here are some tracks, "Oncue - Inhale Exhale (VIKING Remix)" and "Akon - So Damn Beautiful (VIKING Remix)", from square wave expert VIKING. There's also a sneak peek at MIA's new album due out in July with her track "XXXO". (RIAA removal. Voice your outrage here)

So get outside, get some sun, and remember, when you start seeing young hipsterati rocking the ski goggles look, you heard it here first.

And So it Begins

So, if you're one of the kiddies taking summer classes, the semester started this past Monday. Do yourself a favor and don't even bother having that imaginary conversation with yourself, saying how "This semester will be different, I'm really going to study and try hard this time, blah blah blah...". We all know what happens once July rolls around and you realize you've been to two, maybe three lectures all summer.

If you're looking for something to do while you're busy not going to class, you could always dabble in Laptop-DJ-ism, as illustrated in the clip below.

I honestly have nothing against DJ's at all. Shit, I wish I knew cool DJ moves like Tanktop! and Harajuku Girlfriend!...

What's this thing about again? Oh right, music. Here are some tracks to keep your earbuds pumping through these dog days of summer. The first is a classic remix of The Presets' 'This Boy's in Love' by veteran mixer LIFELIKE (Sorry, no DL available). The second is Justin Bieber's 'Baby' mashed with the awesome piano from MSTRKRFT's 'Heartbreaker'. I know what you're thinking, 'Justin Bieber... Seriously...?', and yeah, seriously. So what. It's catchy... Get off my juice.

Schoooool's Out... For... Summer!

That's right folks, today was the last day of final exams (I'm pretty sure anyway... maybe it was Thursday... 'meh). Whether you had a successful finals week, or a downright awful one, one thing always remains the same; after your last test/project/essay, you always go out and drink your balls off. Maybe you could avoid a DUI and ride one of these bad boys home:

(Spotted outside the Chem building on 17th)

Just think how many sloppy woo-girls you could cart home from Grog with one of these things...

In all seriousness though, I hope everyone made it out alive, and can now enjoy their Summer break, be it two weeks or three months.

I was actually able to get a hold of "musician/producer/remixer/noisemaker extraordinaire" Alan Wilkis and get the go-ahead to post up his amazing track, "The Hustle" (the drop at ~1:30 still gets me every time). Also included is something a little more dance friendly from Redlight Remixes.

So go home, get a little sunburn, and let your mom do your laundry. You've earned it.

All the best,
GvG

Finals Week : "I can barely understand these lectures at 3x speed, but it beats actually keeping up with class."

As I'm sure you are all very much aware, this Monday marks the first day of finals week for UF. From now until Friday don't plan on being able to get a good spot at Library West, Marston, the Reitz or even the Hub (Who studies at the Hub though? Seriously?). Your best bet at finding a nice quiet place to make your Bio1 flashcards is probably going to be one of the lesser-known study spots like the Norman library or, if you're really brave, the law school library. Wherever you decide to sprawl out your laptop, three textbooks, and mound of Starbucks empties, be careful. This time of year campus is crawling with over caffeinated pre-med students too jacked up on adderall to notice they just tripped over your laptop cord and are now dragging your MacBook down the escalator.

For those of you lucky enough to get out and party before hell week, hopefully you made it to the
Designer Drugs show at The Vault this past Wednesday. Michael (The one with the glasses) put on a great show, spinning both electro classics and easily identifiable top 40 tracks. I personally had a blasty-blast with some friends of GvG, the boys from The Gainesvillains.

Now, there's no doubting the Designer Drugs duo have some incredible talent. Their remixes are some of the most well known tracks out there. That being said, I left at the end of the night somewhat disappointed. Yes, the show was a ton of fun and the music was banging, but I didn't hear them play any of their smash hits. I had been rocking out to some of their older stuff for a solid ten days prior to the show and didn't even get to yell "cause it breaaaaks my hearrrrt!!". Not even once.

At any rate, if you missed out on the party, here are some of DD's most iconic remixes to help make you feel like you were there. Just blast this in your room, flip the lightswitch on and off quickly, have your roommate spill a cup of Redbull and vodka on your shoulder and BAM, you just saved yourself ten bucks.

Oh, and please exercise a little discretion as to where you listen to these tracks. You don't want to have to explain to that cute brunette chick in your Calc1 class why you're doing
the chair dance with your headphones on, studying outside Subway.

Jorts and Ray-Bans : Summertime in the 'ville

Yep, it's that time of year again. The time when Gainesville's collegiate masses cast off their jeans and pea coats (god I hate pea coats) in favor of board shorts and sun dresses. Before you know it, Broward Beach will be full of bikini-clad freshmen looking to soak up as much melanoma as their ghostly white complexions can handle before leaving to spend their first college summer back home with their parents (never, EVER a good idea).

For those of us staying, we can look forward to less traffic, shorter/no lines at the clubs downtown and, as always, the seriously laid-back atmosphere only Gainesville in the summertime can provide. I personally am already planning which beverage would go best with all those lazy afternoons sitting on my patio watching the afternoon showers roll in (PBR? BL Lime? Hawaiian Punch?).

At any rate, weather you're joining the annual mass-exodus or staying in the city, here are some summer-y tunes to pump out of your car with the windows down. The first two tracks are off of TheGirlsCanHearUs's recently released FREE SAMPLE EP, while the other is from one of my personal fav's Sleigh Bells. All of these would go great on your ipod while you're back at home, fighting with your parents, trying to figure out exactly how you thought going home for the summer was a good idea.
